NEW YORK — A New York-area hospital was hit Tuesday by a truck, prompting an evacuation and rescues.

Animal rescue organizations said the accident occurred at the Emerson Hospital, a trauma center in Manhattan.

“The animal hospital was impacted by an tractor, and we are not able to confirm the extent of the damage at this time,” the New York Hospital Association said in a statement.

“We have been in communication with our partners and we will update you as more information becomes available.”

The Emerson Hospital has a population of about 2,000 animals, the group said.

A spokesman for the hospital said no injuries were reported and the truck driver was treated at the scene.

No passengers were injured.

The truck, which was traveling westbound on Broadway, went through a red light and went off the roadway, said a spokesman for New York State Department of Transportation.

The truck was struck by the back of a tractor trailer, and the trailer’s driver, a 40-year-old man from Staten Island, was taken to Bellevue Hospital.

The tractor trailer was not damaged in the crash, but the driver was taken by ambulance to Bellevues.
