The patients are staying in their rooms and taking care of their physical and mental health, Howard University Medical Center spokesman Jeff O’Brien said Thursday.
The hospital’s emergency room, which handles the emergency care for patients, is handling most of the patients, he said.
O’Briens’ statement was the latest indication of the rapid pace of the hospital’s recovery after a major pandemic left more than 50 percent of the U.S. population without adequate access to care, including nearly 3 million patients with severe or life-threatening conditions.
The numbers from hospitals and clinics around the country suggest that as many as 80 percent of patients in the U:S.
have not been able to get to the emergency room in some form.
OBrien said the hospital has had to quickly ramp up staffing in the emergency department, which is the area closest to patients and can get patients to the hospital in about an hour.
The department has been closed since Wednesday because of the pandemic.
But O’Connells statement does not specify how many patients are at Howard, but he said about half of the emergency-room beds are available to Howard patients, which he said has a higher than normal number.
Howard University Health System has been dealing with the pandemics since October and has had more than 20,000 cases since the start of the crisis, according to hospital statistics.
Many of the people who died are being treated in their home and not in the hospital, O’Connor said.
Howard and other hospitals have also had to open emergency departments in their facilities, which could be difficult if they do not have the equipment.
O.J. Reynolds, the chief executive of Reynolds Companies, a company that makes Reynolds products, said in an email that the company is continuing to support the hospital.
Overnight, Reynolds’ global chief executive, Gary Reynolds, visited Howard and the emergency departments of the hospitals.

Howard University was founded in 1884 and has more than 7,000 students, and has been in financial trouble since the end of March.
It was the first medical school to accept private funding and the first in the nation to do so in 1994.
A national survey conducted by the University of California in April found that Howard’s emergency-receiving capacity had been surpassed by several other universities.
The survey also showed that the health-care system ranked last among the country’s hospitals in terms of patient-safety and quality.
Howard reported $4.3 billion in annual revenue in the most recent fiscal year, down from $9.4 billion in the previous year.
